Many of you know about the problems I've been having for years with my hearing: whenever I get a cold, my ears stay plugged up for a couple of months. Today I went to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat doctor) who gave me a hearing test and looked at my ears under a microscope and performed other tests. I was hoping to discuss with him the possibility of having tubes put in my ears or at least getting a hearing aid to wear when I lose my hearing again.
It turns out that tubes won't help me. The pressure inside my ears is normal. Apparently there isn't a problem (although there could be a slight one) with my eustacian tubes, but he did find an entirely different problem. It turns out that I have a genetic condition (called Oto Sclerosis)which was brought on by my pregnancies -- there's a dead bone in my ears which is causing me to lose my hearing. It's going to get worse, which is not good, but when it gets worse enough, I can have surgery to remove the dead bone and get my hearing back. So it's going to get worse before it gets better. I go back in a year to have my hearing checked again.
